Q: In the summer I like to have a fruit smoothie for a meal, but I get sleepy a few hours later. Is it good for me?
A: Although fruit smoothies are a good way to get your fruit servings for the day, the fatigue you are experiencing is probably due to a drop in blood sugar, as the smoothie contains a lot of simple sugars. If you want to have a smoothie for a meal, try substituting soymilk instead of frozen yogurt, and add protein powder to see if that helps to maintain your energy level. Also, try having a smaller size for a snack instead of a meal, and see how you feel. Here is a recipe you can make at home:
- 8 oz lowfat yogurt (regular, not frozen)
- 8 oz. milk or soy milk
- 1 cup frozen fruit
Blend and enjoy!
